Types of Hearing Loss: Info From Santa Clarita Audiologist

Types of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a condition that can affect many people and can cover a wide array of issues. Hearing loss can generally be divided into three different types.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This is the most common type of hearing loss. It occurs either over time or with old age. Excessive exposure to loud noises or genetics can also lead to sensorineural hearing loss. This hearing loss is almost always permanent but can be treated with the use of hearing aids.

Conductive Hearing Loss

This type of hearing loss can be treated with surgery or medication. Conductive hearing loss usually means that there is a problem with sound passing into the inner ear, such as wax build-up or an infection.

Mixed Hearing Loss

Mixed hearing loss simply means that there is a mix of sensorineural and conductive problems. This would typically be treated medically if possible, but hearing aids are also an option.
